Have you ever wondered about using Plasti Dip in aquariums? In this post we share another fantastic application which shows how versatile and durable it is.
We were recently contacted by one of our customers Terry West who is a Sub Aquatic Scultptor… Actually we might have just made that title up! Terry creates landscapes for fish tanks which are also used as biofilter systems.
These colourful and creative sculptures are handcrafted out of foam and then treated with Plasti Dip to make them waterproof and durable. They add a fantastic extra dimensions to tanks and loads of colour.
Terry sells his creations to the public at craft fairs and via pet shops and is also looking at selling them online
Using Plasti Dip on ponds and aquariums
Plasti Dip has been used for over 30 years in ponds and other marine environments and we have had excellent feedback. Although on the technical data sheets it says it should not be used in aquatics, this generally refers to the liquid state. The choice is ultimately yours, but experience shows that providing the product is correctly cured you should have no issues.
Preparation for using Plasti Dip in sub-aquatic environments
- Thoroughly clean and remove any loose material, ideally abrade the surface for added adhesion, if it is non-porous we suggest priming with Plasti Dip Primer.
- Allow to thoroughly dry before coating with Plasti Dip.
- If you are applying by brush or roller thin the mixture by 25% with Plastic dip thinners for easier application, use natural bristle brush or natural long hair roller.
- For Spraying thin 50/50 by weight.

“I read that this can be used in a tropical aquarium and it ticked all my needs. Have coated inlet and outlet pipes that are underwater and the coating provided appears tough, textured where I want it to be and does exactly what I need. I’ll be soaking them in water for a few days just to remove all residue of the vapours, but, just based upon the product, this is some very good plastic coating paint. Sticks to smooth and rough plastic as well.”
