Plasti Dip is an incredibly versatile product used by industry and the home DIYer for ever more inventive and innovative applications. In this post we look at ten of the most popular ways to use it. Maybe there’s something that will inspire you to think of Plasti Dip in a whole new way?
(1) Temporary car coating
It’s no surprise to see this at the top of the list! Plasti Dip is one of the most popular products to use for temporary car coatings. You can uses it on badges, trims, wheels, wing mirrors or you can coat a whole car in it if you wish. Not only does it form a robust protective covering on the vehicle, but if you apply it correctly and without the use of a primer you can happily leave it on your car for 2 or 3 years and then peel it off easily without damaging the paintwork underneath. Plasti Dip can easily be applied by a competent DIYer, but if you think it’s beyond your skillset you can call in the professionals. Have a look at www.prodipper.co.uk to find your nearest professional Plasti Dipper!
(2) Cos Play costume making
We are constantly inspired by the wonderful Cos Play costumes we see on social media and proud to be a small part of their creation. Most Cos Play costumes are made out of EVA foam which are more familiar to most people as the colourful inter-locking floor mats you see in children’s nurseries. Using EVA foam makes a Cos Play helmet or suit of armor incredibly light weight, economical and easy to construct, but you can’t paint on it directly which is where Plasti Dip serves its purpose. Cos Players spray Plasti Dip directly on to the EVA foam as a primer and then paint on top of it!
(3) Making crochet slippers non-slip
Handmade crochet slippers are incredibly popular, but these soft breathable knitted wonders have one disadvantage ver more conventional footwear, they are rather slippy underfoot particularly on tiled or wooden floors. So some clever person came up with the idea of using Plasti Dip as a non-slip coating on the soles of the slippers and it has been repeated many times over by satisfied customers all over!
(4) Waterproofing boats
A number of our customers use Plasti Dip for their boats. It has been successfully used to waterproof old inflatable kayaks which have started to let in water and can also be applied to a skin on frame kayak to waterproof that. Being UVA stable it is particularly well suited to marine use as it will not fade in sunlight
(5) Waterproofing tents big and small
One of our customers recently conducted a very rigorous test of Plasti Dip and other products and their effectiveness at reproofing a groundsheet. Among the other products he used were yacht varnish, floor varnish emulsion, and several other (non-silicon based) coatings, but his conclusion was that Plasti Dip did the best job, closely followed by yacht varnish.
We also sell a Plasti Dip product called Plasti Seam to many marquee manufacturers who use it to cover the holes caused by machine sewing needles when seams are joined together. This ensures every single part of the marquee is waterproofed.
(6) Getting creative with jewellery
Many independent jewellers use Plasti Dip in a variety of creative ways from dipping metal, to dipping feathers. Pick your base material and add a colourful rubberised finish which gives a contemporary look
(7) Dipping tool handles
Yes we know, not the most surprising use on the list since this is what Plasti Dip was originally invented for, but seeing as it has so many other uses now it’s worth putting tool handle dipping on the list for those who have never tried it! If you are a complete first timer with Plasti Dip the video above is useful tooas it shows you how to get the best finish on your tools.
(8) For coating the inside of wooden planters in place of a liner
Plasti Dip is durable and waterproof and can easily and quickly be applied to a variety of shapes using either an aerosol or paintbrush. It protects wood from rotting and gives a professional looking finish.
(9) As a coating for furniture
Plasti Dip was recently used to create a stunning bespoke sofa for the Stella McCartney store in London and we’ve also seen it used to create architectural cubes with a rubberised finish and to weather-proof outdoor furniture. The image above takes you to a post about a dipped chair which has the additional advantage of having non-slip legs.
(10) Dipping your laptop (or phone, or tablet!)
Give your laptop a completely different look with a removable rubberised coating in the colour of your choice. We’ve seen plenty of people do this online without incident and managing to produce a really slick looking result. Just make sure you cover everything you don’t want sprayed with masking tape first!
