Plasti Dip is hard-wearing and excellent at waterproofing, so it’s a popular choice among the sailing community for a number of uses. In this post we round up some of the popular uses of Plasti Dip on boats.
Using Plasti Dip to waterproof the cratch cover of a narrowboat
Tina Webb says:
“I bought a can of plastidip to paint the cratch cover on my boat. It did a perfect job. Completely waterproof and looks good too. Thanks for a great product.”
Use Plasti Dip on the deck of boats
Ray Chitty (photo above) says : “I needed to find a waterproof, hard-wearing covering to enliven the deck of our boat. On a recommendation from a friend we were directed to the Plasti Dip website. Ordered a couple of 750ml tins in grey which arrived within days. Applied with little effort over the old deck and looks fabulous, time will tell how though it is but have high hopes of a lasting deck coating.”
John Wickins says: “Using Plasti Dip to seal & waterproof the Plywood Deck on my 20 foot Cabin Cruiser I’m encouraged by the first coat once I realised that it would cover better slightly thinned down.”
Refurbishing a boat’s PVC canopy
Ash says: “Used a 750ml can of blue coloured Plasti Dip to refurbish a 30yr old PVC boat tarpaulin. The tarpaulin had become threadbare in a number of areas where, over many years, lying and water and the sun had bleached the cover. Used Plasti Dip neat over the threadbare areas and creases which l found completely renovated and waterproofed the old damage. Plasti Dip paint starts to “go off “ and solidify within a minute.
Although the tarpaulin was only about 10’ x 5’, l decided to thin the remaining paint, after applying neat, to the threadbare creases, by about 15%, and then applied thinned down to the remaining area of the cover.
The boat cover is now fully waterproofed again. The colour penetration is good. Would recommend this product for PVC cover refurbishment.”
Graham Pegg says: “Thanks very much for paint and thinners. It was used on a boats canopy and the results were excellent. Sorry as yet no photos. Will try to get some.”

Using Plasti Dip to waterproof kayaks and canoes
Owen (photo above) says : “Brilliant stuff. The basic Plasti Dip has totally waterproofed my old inflatable kayak and given it a whole new career on the high seas. Thanks for the advice regarding thinning the first coat as well. I’m very impressed as are my newly dry passengers!”
It’s not just good on inflatable kayaks. Harry used Plasti Dip to repair a pair of vintage canoes… “I have used the Plasti Dip to coat the canvas covering of my 50 year old pair of canoes. Its flexibility and water resistance coupled with the fine finish make it the ideal product for this purpose.”
Solving condensation problems
Stephen says:
“I have now purchased 2 lots of this product for my boat. When using the primer it gives excellent coverage. I used Plastidip to help with the condensation problems associated with fibreglass boats and it works. When you think about it, what could be better than applying a rubber skin on the inside of a boat. I am a builder and use a multitude of products in my work, – this is excellent.”
Repairing UV damaged RIBs
Geoff King says:
“We have a rather old Avon white rigid inflatable dinghy. It had some black rubber around the boat which after oxidation in the sunlight for many years started to rub off onto people’s clothes. We painted it with the white plasti dip and the result has been an overwhelming success. After 2 years in a salty and windy marine environment, it still looks good. Great product.”
Fred Attwood:
“I had a severely UV damaged Inflatable Dinghy. It had been used on our Harbour Launch for several years but had been so damaged by the sun that it was ‘skipped’. Not being one to give up without a fight I salvaged it off the skip, and after some very minor valve repairs and a little patch and a couple of coats of red Plasti Dip, the PVC dinghy is back on line. For info the cost of using your paint worked out at about a quarter of that using the Marine Industry version of flexible paint.”
And you can use Plasti Dip HCF for boats too…
HCF (Hard Coat Finish) is a hard-wearing flexible coating manufactured by Performix, Plasti-Dips parent company.

“I had a problem and couldn’t find a suitable product to waterproof and reinforce my newly built skin on frame kayak, all the company’s i contacted were not interested when they realised it was a small bespoke one off! Then I found plasti dip online. I spoke to Peter who was so helpful and knowledgable about his product and soon identified what product he thought might be a solution to my problem. He asked me to send a small sample of the material I wanted to coat, I received it back within the week coated with plasti dip HCF and it looked good! I purchased 2 tins one clear the other grey, it worked and looks great!!!
